Hello to all fans of quilting!
This is “My Patch” channel and my name is Irina Orlovskaya. First of all, I`d like to thank our subscribers for your likes, subs and comments! Thank you so much! It`s a great pleasure to get your feedback. It inspires us to make new workshops. The questioning on our channel showed that cutting theme arouses great interest. So we decided to make a new cutting video for you. Today I`ll show you a very amusing block called “Disappearing Hourglass” and several ways of its layout. Choose the best and most beautiful for you and start sewing! We`ll need 2 pieces of fabric – one light and one dark square with 10*10″ or 25,4*25.4 cm sides. Let`s put them on each other with faces, even the edges and stitch along the perimeter, leaving 6 mm overmeasures on each side. We stitched our square. And now we take a ruller and cut it diagonally. We get such 4 squares or half square triangles. Now we should smooth the seams out to the dark part and lay the “Hourglass” block. I`ll show you how to do it. Let`s cut these ears off. Then lay out our block in such a way and sew the parts together. To do it, put two stitches here and here. This is what we`ve got after making the “Hourglass” block. Here is the backside of the block. Many of you asked to show the backside and to show how we smooth the seams. Here we smooth them out to the dark triangle. And after connecting the squares, we smooth the seams in opposite directions. Now we should cut the block into three equal parts. We get such nine squares and start laying out the pattern. I`ll show you the first Hourglass pattern. First of all, we turn these squares, then we turn the side ones so that these corners look into the opposite directions. The last thing we should do is to turn the central square. You may turn it or may leave it as it is – it depends on your preference. So, here is the first layout – the star. Have a look at the scheme to see the final result on a big quilt. The second option – let`s turn the side squares and the central part only. You may not turn the center as well. Then you`ll get such a pattern. Here is the scheme of how it will look like on a big bedspread. And the third option – we interchange these squares and turn these ones. So we get something like the eight. Here is the scheme. Now let`s connect the parts. We sew side squares to the middle one and repeat the same procedure with the other two lines. After that, we sew the three lines together. The final block measures 27.5*27.5 cm.
Now you see the three main options of the Hourglass layout. But I`m sure there are even more intersting patterns, which can be formed out of these 9 squares. So, it`s up to you! Improvise, try different patterns, choose the one you like! Now we say goodbye to you and see you soon!
